Chris Vollum is an Oakville-based resident and recognized authority on Facebook & Twitter.
In March of 2007, Chris’ grade eight daughter wanted to join Facebook because “everyone else was on it.” As Chris researched Facebook’s philosophy toward both user privacy and the handling of user-posted content, he was shocked at the level of wide-open default security and privacy settings that the social networking site exhibited.
Armed with a deep understanding of Facebook’s most current policies and settings, Chris established Facebook 101 with the sole purpose of educating parents, teachers, administrators and students on how to effectively apply their Facebook profile settings to minimize privacy breaches and proactively defend against cyber-bullying.
While Facebook 101’s primary audience remains to be schools, the workshop has evolved to embrace the corporate environment with an emphasis on identifying the short and long-term effects of management and employee Facebook misbehaviour, and the immediate professional and personal consequences that such behaviour has in people’s lives.
Described as a “must see” event by school administrators, police services, parents and students, Chris’ user-friendly workshop delivers a balanced and detailed look into the world’s largest social networking site and its vast potential, with an emphasis on safety, security and privacy.
As of February 2012, Facebook 101 has been presented to more than 210,000 students throughout 22 Ontario School Boards and independent schools.
